Origin Materials, a company focused on developing sustainable materials, has made significant advancements in its manufacturing of tethered PET caps. The innovative caps are designed to stay connected to bottles, which is becoming increasingly mandatory in the European Union and potentially other regions.
The company’s tethered PET cap design is a response to the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive, which aims to reduce plastic waste. Origin’s technology uses the threads of the PET cap and bottle to lock the cap into place, ensuring a secure and user-friendly experience.
The tethered PET cap is compatible with the PCO 1881 neck finish and can be made with various types of PET plastic, including virgin PET, recycled PET (rPET), and bio-based PET. This versatility allows for increased recyclability and sustainability.
Origin’s PET caps have been designed with recyclability, shelf-life extension, lightweighting, and the ability to use recycled PET in mind. The company’s goal is to enable mono-material packaging while maintaining a high-quality user experience.
The company has seen strong interest in its tethered PET cap design and plans to make it commercially available in Q4 2024, followed by PCO 1881-compatible tethered caps. Origin is working with partners to address the most pressing sustainability challenges and is committed to its mission of helping the world transition to sustainable materials
“We use the threads of the PET cap and bottle to lock the cap into place, angled away from the mouth, not toward it. We are combining the performance and sustainability advantages of our PET caps – recyclability, shelf-life extension, lightweighting, ability to use recycled PET, and enablement of mono-material packaging – with an excellent user experience,” said John Bissell, Origin Co-Founder and Co-CEO.
