Novonesis invests €600M in India enzyme plant

Biotechnology company Novonesis is investing €600 million ($699 million) in a new enzyme facility in India. The move taps into the country’s growing role as a biomanufacturing hub.

The Patalganga site, located in Maharashtra, will strengthen Novonesis’s biosolutions supply network. It will serve high-growth markets across India, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. The company expects continued strong demand for bio-based solutions in these regions.

By expanding enzyme production, Novonesis aims to support industries seeking greater supply resilience. Food and beverage players are increasingly turning to sustainable, bio-based solutions to tackle climate and cost pressures. Novonesis said the facility will use water recycling and energy-efficient systems. This will help reduce resource use and lower Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

The investment comes as India strengthens its position as a biotechnology manufacturing hub. Government initiatives like the BioE3 framework aim to accelerate innovation in bio-based chemicals and enzymes.

Krishna Mohan Puvvada, Novonesis’s regional president for the Middle East, India and Africa, described India as well positioned at the center of emerging markets. He said the country has the talent needed to advance the company’s bio-based economy goals. The facility will integrate into Novonesis’s global production network, he added, boosting operational resilience and customer proximity.

The biomanufacturing hub is expected to be fully operational in 2030. It will produce enzymes for food and beverage, biofuels and household care industries.

Puvvada said food processors increasingly turn to biosolutions for resource efficiency. He pointed to raw material price volatility and rising demand for cleaner-label products as key drivers.
