New initiative helps COP30 participants offset flight emissions with SAF

The Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) announced a new initiative for COP30. The COP30 SAF platform helps attendees calculate and offset their aviation emissions. It supports sustainable aviation fuel that meets SABA’s strict sustainability standards. The platform is open to all COP30 attendees, including non-members. COP30 will be held in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025.

Kim Carnahan, CEO of the Center for Green Market Activation and SABA Secretariat, said many COP attendees face a dilemma: emissions from flying. The platform gives travelers a way to calculate their flight emissions. They can then support SAF to help decarbonize their travel. This connects SAF producers with buyers who want to reduce their climate impact.

The SAF offered through the platform is supplied by SkyNRG. SABA started a competitive procurement process for SAF earlier this year. They have over a decade of experience in building supply chains and meeting sustainability standards. SkyNRG hopes this partnership will make SAF more accessible and help the industry scale up.

The SABA COP30 initiative provides all necessary resources in one platform. Attendees can estimate their flight emissions using two tools. For commercial flights, they will use Google’s Travel Impact Model. Private jet travelers will use the Eurocontrol Small Emitters tool. After estimating emissions, attendees can purchase high-quality SAF certificates vetted by SABA. They will later receive a retirement statement from the SAFc Registry, confirming the transaction’s integrity.

Elizabeth Sturcken, Vice President at the Environmental Defense Fund, highlighted that not all SAF is equal. High-quality SAF must meet rigorous environmental standards. SABA’s vetting process ensures that buyers’ support delivers real climate benefits. This also signals to policymakers and markets that high-integrity SAF is in demand.

Bryan Fisher, Managing Director at RMI, said COP30 is a key platform for showcasing climate solutions. Using SAF certificates demonstrates how market tools can boost project finance, scale production, and accelerate clean fuel adoption. Trusted infrastructure like the SAFc Registry and SABA’s framework can drive investment and innovation.
