Michelin ResiCare has signed a distribution partnership with IMCD Europe to widen access to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, or 5-HMF, a bio-sourced molecule made from renewable feedstocks. The move is designed to speed up the shift toward renewable chemistry across European manufacturing.
The molecule is produced at Michelin ResiCare’s industrial site in Péage-de-Roussillon, France. Demand for 5-HMF is growing quickly among materials and formulation chemical companies, as manufacturers look for alternatives to fossil-based intermediates. Production is set to start in early 2027, with the facility reaching an annual capacity of 3,000 metric tons.
Under the new agreement, IMCD will handle European distribution of the molecule, adding logistics support and local technical expertise. Michelin ResiCare will continue working directly with its major strategic accounts, while the partnership opens the door to smaller manufacturers who previously had limited access.
Michelin ResiCare has already spent more than two years helping large chemical companies test 5-HMF in different applications. That groundwork is now expanding, with IMCD’s European network expected to bring the molecule to a broader range of industrial players.
Laurent Lemonnier, chief executive of Michelin ResiCare, said the partnership marks a significant step in efforts to popularize 5-HMF and support more responsible chemistry. He pointed to IMCD’s technical expertise and continental reach as key reasons for the collaboration.
IMCD, which has a strong presence in polymers, advanced materials and specialized formulations, will support manufacturers as they integrate 5-HMF into new applications, offering both technical guidance and development assistance.
The partnership reflects Michelin ResiCare’s broader push to build solutions from renewable resources, lower the environmental impact of manufacturing, and supply more sustainable materials for future industries.
