Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi advance major biofuel project in Sweden

Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi have signed all agreements to commercialize a large eFuel production facility in Umeå, Sweden. This milestone follows the approval of environmental permits by the Land and Environmental Court in Umeå. The project moves into the execution phase, with activities ready to begin.

The facility, named FlagshipTHREE, will be located at Umeå Energi’s Dåvaverket cogeneration plant in the Eco Industrial Park. It aims to produce up to 100,000 tons of eMethanol annually. The plant will capture 150,000 tons of biogenic CO₂ through Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology. It is expected to be operational by 2028.

eFuels like eMethanol are vital for reducing emissions in shipping and aviation sectors. These industries currently rely on millions of tons of fossil fuels each year.

Liquid Wind, a Nordic eFuel developer, is leading the project with Umeå Energi. The facility will be a major investment in northern Sweden and a key part of the Eco Industrial Park. The park promotes circular economy, electrification, and climate-neutral industry.

By using residual and waste materials, the plant will help create a sustainable industrial ecosystem. The project also enhances local energy resilience and reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels. It supports the EU’s strategy for energy independence and climate goals.
