Lignin Industries AB, a Swedish greentech company, has partnered with UK-based Hellyar Plastics to expand the market for its bio-based plastic, Renol. This collaboration aims to commercialize Lignin’s patented technology, which utilizes lignin—an abundant organic material found in plants—as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based plastics.
Renol® offers a solution to reduce plastic production’s reliance on fossil fuels by incorporating lignin, often underutilized, with over 700 million tons discarded each year. Hellyar has begun incorporating Renol® into products made from Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polypropylene (PP), with applications in sectors such as domestic goods and construction expected to launch soon.
Both companies have been collaborating for 18 months and have received positive feedback regarding Renol®’s market potential. The material is fully recyclable and demonstrates flexibility in its applications.
Fredrik Malmfors, CEO of Lignin Industries, highlighted the partnership’s role in leveraging existing industry infrastructure for scalable deployment. David Hellyar, Chairman of Hellyar Plastics, praised Renol® for meeting high industry standards as they prepare for market introduction.
This partnership marks a notable advancement in the pursuit of sustainable plastic solutions.
