Interface, Inc., a leader in sustainable flooring solutions, has introduced a prototype of its nora® rubber flooring that is designed to be carbon negative, meaning it stores more carbon than is emitted during its manufacture.
The prototype is being showcased at the BAU trade fair in Munich, Germany, from January 13 to 17, 2025. The nora® flooring’s carbon negative credentials are measured from raw material extraction through manufacturing and packaging, making it a pioneering product in flooring sustainability.
This development builds on Interface’s earlier achievement in 2020 when it launched the Embodied Beauty™ carpet tile collection, the first in the industry to be carbon negative.
Key to creating this innovative flooring was the integration of bio-based and carbon-storing raw materials, which have been part of nora’s product line for several years. The company aims to attain a carbon negative status across its product line by 2040.
The new carbon negative prototype includes increased amounts of recycled and bio-based materials, aligning with Interface’s goal of minimizing environmental impacts.
Liz Minné, Head of Global Sustainability Strategy at Interface, emphasized the prototype supports the company’s broader sustainability objectives, particularly in the commercial sector, including healthcare and education.
The product is expected to be commercially available by late 2025, following further refinements to ensure it meets the standards of design, quality, and performance that customers expect from Interface.
