Food trays made with Styrolution® PS 158K BC100, a fully bio-attributed polystyrene from INEOS Styrolution, are available at a leading Japanese retail chain. This new material is produced entirely from renewable feedstock and offers a 172% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional polystyrene.
The company successfully commercialized this bio-based polystyrene, with products hitting store shelves in early 2025 through collaboration with a major Japanese retail franchise.
The material uses an ISCC-certified mass balance approach and meets all global food contact regulations, including Japan’s Food Sanitation Act. It has also received JCII’s A certification for rigorous food safety standards.
Styrolution® PS 158K BC100 features excellent heat resistance and clarity, ensuring that the packaging maintains its quality and visual appeal. Marcela Villegas, Vice President of Business Management APAC at INEOS Styrolution, expressed excitement about the milestone.
She highlighted that integrating bio-attributed materials demonstrates that sustainability can be achieved without compromising safety or quality.
This development marks a significant step toward more sustainable packaging solutions, aligning environmental goals with consumer safety and product excellence.
