In a recent collaboration, IKEA and Kyocera joined forces with Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) to reduce carbon emissions on a biofuel-powered voyage. The voyage utilized a 24% biofuel blend, featuring Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester as a component in VLSFO. This innovative approach has been shown to minimize carbon footprint in shipping by capturing and utilizing CO2 from the atmosphere.
The partnership has enabled the calculation of carbon savings through the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) and blockchain technology, providing a transparent and immutable record of the reduction. This initiative is part of OOCL’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability in the shipping industry.
As a pioneer in biofuel adoption, OOCL has been utilizing biofuels on select vessels since 2023. The company’s trials with various biofuels on different vessel types and engines have accelerated in recent months, with the goal of establishing compatibility and viability.
Michael Xu, Director of Trades at OOCL, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts towards sustainability: “We are committed to reducing emissions along the supply chain and creating a greener future together with our partners and stakeholders.”
This successful partnership demonstrates the potential for biofuels to play a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon shipping industry.
