Hyliion Holdings Corp has been awarded a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the implementation of its KARNO™ generators as part of a project aimed at reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas industry. The total funding for the project amounts to $8.4 million, combining federal and non-federal contributions.

The KARNO generators have the capability to transform well-head gas into sustainable electricity with near-zero emissions. Recent tests in the Permian Basin confirmed the generator’s ability to utilize unprocessed gas, positioning it as a potential solution for mitigating flaring and methane emissions.

Key features of the KARNO generator include a linear generation system that harnesses heat and employs 3D metal printing technology. Its design enables long-lasting, maintenance-free operation, making it suitable for the challenging conditions of oil fields. Additionally, the generator can operate using a wide range of fuel types, further enhancing its versatility.

This grant is part of a larger DOE initiative which aims to invest $850 million in projects focused on monitoring and reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. The funding will facilitate the deployment of KARNO generators, contributing to advancements in sustainable energy generation and potential economic benefits for local communities.
