Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy to develop biochemical technology using industrial hemp

Honeywell and SGP BioEnergy have announced a new collaboration aimed at advancing technology to convert industrial hemp and other plant-based materials into biochemicals. This initiative targets the production of sustainable alternatives to traditionally fossil fuel-derived chemicals, paving the way for more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.

As part of this partnership, Honeywell will focus on developing scalable technology to utilize plant materials as feedstock for biochemical production. SGP BioEnergy will contribute infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and second-generation feedstocks, including industrial hemp, through its “READY.GROW.” program.

In addition to technology development, Honeywell will provide ongoing operational support and workforce training to ensure effective implementation within SGP BioEnergy’s operations. This collaboration not only broadens Honeywell’s portfolio but also aligns with key industry trends, particularly the ongoing energy transition.

“Honeywell is dedicated to creating innovative solutions that facilitate the energy transition. This new technology will permit the large-scale production of various petrochemical alternatives using second-generation feedstocks,” stated Bryan Glover, Chief Technology and Growth Officer at Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. He emphasized that harnessing non-edible feedstocks like hemp allows for significant reductions in fossil fuel dependency without compromising food resources.

Randy Delbert Letang, founder and CEO of SGP BioEnergy, noted the growing global demand for cleaner, safer solutions and the supportive policies aligned with this movement. “The advancements in biochemicals and biomass place us at a crucial turning point,” he remarked. “Partnering with Honeywell, known for its leadership and technological expertise, complements our ‘Zero Waste Ecosystem’ model and furthers our decarbonization efforts.”
