Firefly Green Fuels, a company specializing in the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has announced a new partnership with Sanepar, a prominent player in Brazil’s water and sanitation sector. The two organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that aims to facilitate the conversion of biosolids—predominantly sewage—into advanced biofuels, thereby increasing Firefly’s capacity to produce SAF.
This collaboration is poised to significantly strengthen Firefly’s access to sustainable feedstock, essential for biofuel manufacturing, while expanding its operational presence in Brazil and the wider Latin American market. Sanepar’s expansive infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of the necessary materials to meet the surging demand for sustainable aviation fuel globally.
The partnership comes at a pivotal time, as it aligns with Brazil’s longstanding commitment to biofuel innovation. According to Firefly, this joint venture not only secures a diverse supply chain for SAF but also positions the company advantageously within the flourishing Brazilian biofuels landscape.
James Hygate, the CEO of Firefly Green Fuels, highlighted the favorable regulatory environment in Brazil, characterized by recent government initiatives designed to promote biofuels, which he believes will yield substantial opportunities for growth and innovation.
In 2024, the Brazilian government introduced measures to mandate higher biofuel content in fuel supplies and to advance technological improvements for SAF production, further enhancing the nation’s role in the renewable energy sector.
This partnership between Firefly Green Fuels and Sanepar signifies an important step towards advancing sustainable aviation fuel initiatives and contributing to the global effort to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
