Evanesce to launch production of compostable drinking straws using Biodolomer material

Evanesce, an American producer of sustainable serviceware, is set to commence production of 7.5 million drinking straws made from Biodolomer, a compostable material derived from limestone. This innovative material is developed and manufactured by Gaia Biomaterials, a Swedish company renowned for its eco-friendly solutions.

Peter Stenström, CEO of Gaia Biomaterials, highlighted the substantial market opportunity, noting that the U.S. alone consumes approximately 500 million drinking straws each day. He emphasized the importance of providing an attractive alternative: “We offer a compostable material that delivers the customer experience they desire from a drinking straw—without any taste of paper.”

The production of these straws will take place at Evanesce’s facility in South Carolina, where extensive trials with the Biodolomer material have been conducted. Douglas Horne, CEO of Evanesce, pointed out the rising consumer demand for sustainable and affordable products. He expressed confidence in Biodolomer, stating, “Out of the materials we have tested, Biodolomer is the only one that has met our quality expectations while remaining a competitively priced premium product.”

Biodolomer has received certifications for industrial composting from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) in the U.S. and DinCertco in Europe. Additionally, it has FDA authorization for safe food contact, and notably, it does not produce microplastics during the composting process.

Stenström also expressed optimism about the new straws, stating, “We are convinced that this product will encourage more companies to adopt solutions that allow their customers to enjoy their favorite beverages without the unpleasant aftertaste associated with conventional straws.”

Gaia Biomaterials, headquartered in Helsingborg, Sweden, specializes in producing Biodolomer, which combines many of the desirable qualities of plastic while eliminating the associated drawbacks, such as plastic pollution and high carbon emissions. The company, founded in 2015 by Åke Rosén, a prominent figure in packaging materials science, holds several bioplastic patents and aims to provide sustainable alternatives for various applications.

The launch of Evanesce’s new compostable straws represents a notable advancement in the pursuit of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics in the serviceware industry.
