Enviva publishes paper on the evolution of modern biomass

On October 3 Enviva Inc. released a white paper, Biomass: Unlocking a Future Beyond Fossil Fuel, discussing the further applications of biomass into industries such as steel, cement, lime, chemicals, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), among others.

Enviva Inc. is currently the world’s leading producer of sustainably sourced wood biomass. While their product is predominately used to decarbonize power and heat generation, modern biomass will increasingly be used to reduce emissions in these sectors that are responsible for nearly one-third of global CO2 emissions.

The paper describes how Enviva’s wood biomass can offer an alternative solution for decarbonization in several industrial applications based on a reliable, sustainable, large-scale producer, with a booming business across multiple continents. Many of the process temperatures, chemicals, and feedstocks currently derived from fossil fuels can be produced more cleanly and at a lower cost with sustainably sourced biomass. In fact, production of a wide range of liquid and gaseous fuels and industrial chemicals is made possible via wood biomass feedstock. Recently, Enviva announced its first U.S.-based SAF contract with Alder Fuels to deliver the biomass feedstock flexibility needed to achieve jet fuel decarbonization at scale.

Recently, the United States passed The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which supports the global clean energy transition and climate change mitigation strategies by extending and modifying tax credits for the production of renewable energy from biomass and other technologies, as well as enhancing tax credits for carbon capture, utilization, and storage at both industrial facilities and power plants across the country.
