EnviTec Biogas USA, a subsidiary of the German firm specializing in renewable energy, has launched its largest anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in South Dakota. This state-of-the-art plant began operations earlier this year and marks a significant milestone for the company in the U.S. market.
The facility processes over 300,000 gallons of manure daily, sourced from more than 9,500 dairy cows. At full capacity, it is projected to generate 483 standard cubic feet of renewable natural gas per minute, equating to about 177,000 million BTU annually.
Lars von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas USA, indicated that this plant represents the fifth out of 15 planned biogas facilities aimed at promoting renewable energy solutions in collaboration with a major U.S. agribusiness.
Timothy Logan, President of EnviTec Biogas Construction, emphasized the dual benefits of the new facility. “This project not only transforms dairy waste into renewable energy but also significantly lowers the carbon footprint for dairy farming,” he explained.
EnviTec Biogas distinguishes itself in the U.S. by manufacturing concrete tanks locally. This capability stems from a partnership with Collins Precast, a regional supplier of precast concrete products.
In addition to building the biogas facility, the unnamed client has established a multi-year service contract with EnviTec. This agreement includes technical support, around-the-clock hotline assistance, and biological services from their Watertown office. Logan mentioned that EnviTec has been proactively involved during the commissioning phase, providing weekly samples and analyses through their laboratory.
The company has also recently completed three projects which are set to become operational shortly, including some in Minnesota.
EnviTec Biogas specializes in various technologies, including anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, ammonia stripping, and bio-LCO2 and bio-LNG production, reinforcing its commitment to a more sustainable energy future.
