Ecovia-Bio announced the opening of its new commercial production plant in Livonia, Michigan. This milestone makes it the first and only manufacturer of polyglutamic acid (PGA) and its derivatives in the United States.
PGA is known as “nature’s thickener.” It is a biobased, biodegradable polymer. It has many uses in cosmetics, agriculture, and diapers. It can replace synthetic polyacrylates, which create microplastics. Many regions are banning synthetic polyacrylates to reduce environmental and human health risks.
The new 20,000-square-foot facility is state-of-the-art. It will supply early customers with domestically made, high-quality PGA solutions. The plant helps meet the growing demand for biobased materials.
By producing PGA in the U.S., Ecovia-Bio strengthens supply chain resilience. It also supports innovation for partners across the country.
Dr. Jeremy Minty, CTO and Co-Founder, said, “Commissioning our Livonia plant is an exciting step for Ecovia-Bio and sustainable manufacturing in the U.S.”
He added, “Our goal is to deliver high-performing, biobased solutions that help our partners innovate and grow responsibly. This new plant allows us to bring sustainable, domestically produced PGA to industries seeking smarter, eco-friendly alternatives to traditional synthetic materials.”
