Earthfirst launches biobased compostable laminations for sustainable packaging solutions

Earthfirst® Films, recognized for its innovations in bio-material films, has introduced a new line of Earthfirst® Compostable Laminations designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. These market-ready pre-laminations are unprinted and engineered for high barrier performance, currently being utilized commercially.

The initial offering is the Earthfirst PouchReady Metallized film, a 4-mil multi-layer structure that emphasizes durability and high barrier capabilities, specifically optimized for pouch-making applications. This product is also designed to be zipper receptive, accommodating various product contents. Earthfirst® Films has indicated that additional pre-laminations for other market segments will be introduced in the near future.

According to Kelly Williams, Managing Director of the Lamination Division at Earthfirst® Films, the development of this new category responds to an explicit market demand from small and medium-sized brands (SMBs). Williams notes, “Brands benefit from proven material science and immediate availability. Commercialization times are now considerably shorter.”

The introduction of these digital-friendly pre-laminations allows printers to offer customization options with low minimum order quantities. This innovation not only contributes to shortened lead times but also enables digital printers to maintain focus on their core printing operations.

The compostable films are bio-based and made from renewable raw materials, aligning with increasing calls for environmentally friendly packaging. When disposed of through composting, these laminations contribute to a regenerative circular system, transforming packages with food remnants into valuable nutrients that can enhance soil quality and support plant growth, ultimately fostering ecosystem resilience.
