Canadian waste-to-energy developer Convertus Group has secured $96.2 million in project financing. The funding will advance its flagship biofuel facility in York Region, Ontario. Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit provided the capital. Selkirk Advisory Group served as financial advisor to Convertus.
The facility will convert organic waste into renewable natural gas. It will also produce food-grade carbon dioxide and low-carbon liquid fertiliser. The plant is designed to process up to 200,000 tons of source-separated organic waste each year. Expected output is between 350,000 and 400,000 gigajoules of biomethane annually.
The facility will also capture and liquefy biogenic CO2. This gas will be used in food, beverage and industrial applications. Low-carbon fertiliser will be generated for agricultural use too. The multi-product design reflects a broader shift in the anaerobic digestion industry. Facilities increasingly draw several revenue streams from a single organic waste input, rather than producing gas alone.
Located in the Greater Toronto Area, the York Biofuel Facility will add long-term organics processing capacity to the region. Commissioning is expected to begin later this year. Commercial operations are scheduled to launch in early 2027.
Jamie Jongsma, chief financial officer of Convertus Group, called the financing a major milestone. She said it reflects the confidence Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit has placed in the company’s long-term vision. Jongsma added that the facility represents the next generation of anaerobic digestion infrastructure, turning organic waste into renewable energy and valuable low-carbon products.
Benjamin Shenwick, principal at Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit, said the project will deliver essential environmental infrastructure with strong operational redundancy.
The deal arrives amid growing momentum in Canada’s renewable natural gas market. Recent activity includes biogas upgrading deployments in British Columbia and provincial funding awards for landfill biomethane projects in Quebec.
