Denver-based supplement producer PlantFusion has launched a new stand-up pouch format for its powdered protein products, using a multilayer plant-based material construction that is 100% compostable. The company’s commitment to reducing plastic packaging is a key part of its sustainability efforts.
PlantFusion, which has been producing plant-based supplements since 2009, has developed a range of products that are certified organic, non-GMO, kosher, and vegan. The company’s CEO and co-founder, Phil Vigeant, said that the company is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact and providing consumers with sustainable options.
The company’s new packaging is made from a blend of materials derived from eucalyptus and cassava root, and is certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) as commercially compostable. The pouch is also designed to be recyclable and can be composted at home using a countertop composting machine.
According to Vigeant, the company spent over a year researching global options for plastic-free packaging and considered using paper, but it did not provide the necessary moisture barrier and could not seal as well as bioplastics. The company also looked at post-consumer recycled material, but it did not break down as needed.
PlantFusion’s new packaging is more expensive than traditional plastic packaging, but Vigeant believes that it is an important step in mitigating plastic use. The company plans to use the new packaging for all of its full organic fermented line products, including its Alkalizing Greens, Fruitful Greens, Beet Powder, and Cacao Greens.
