Cambium and Checkerspot have formed a collaborative partnership to develop and commercialize bio-based, impact-resistant, high-temperature, and flame-retardant foam products and composite-foam systems. This joint effort aims to address critical capability and supply chain gaps in the development of high-performance materials for various defense and commercial applications.

Cambium has expertise in developing high-temperature resistant composite systems through molecular redesign of resins, converting them into advanced composites such as prepregs, foams, and carbon-carbon thermal protection systems. These products are designed to withstand extreme conditions like heat, fire, and rapid-heating impacts while maintaining structural integrity.

Cambium co-founder and CEO Simon Waddington said, “With our vertically-integrated development approach, from computational material discovery through to production of advanced composite solutions, Cambium is redefining rapid innovation, production and deployment. We see a unique opportunity with Checkerspot to seamlessly leverage all of it to rapidly advance bio-based, impact-resistant, high-temperature and flame-retardant foam products and composite-foam systems. This is a great opportunity to showcase the complementarity that exists between us.”

Checkerspot’s WING Platform is a biomaterials platform that leverages a proprietary molecular foundry, materials science, polymer chemistry, fabrication, and formulation capabilities to deliver innovative biomaterials with clear performance properties. This platform enables companies to partner with Checkerspot to develop, test, and commercialize materials across various industries.

The collaboration between Cambium and Checkerspot aims to accelerate the development of bio-based materials that meet the demands of high-performance applications. The partnership combines Cambium’s expertise in composite systems with Checkerspot’s biomaterials capabilities to create innovative solutions that meet the needs of defense and commercial customers.
