Braskem, a leading polyolefins producer in the Americas, has launched a new bio-circular polypropylene (PP) product, branded as WENEW. This innovative material is designed to promote circularity in the food industry by repurposing used cooking oil (UCO), reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting environmental sustainability.
The new bio-circular PP is identical to traditional PP in properties and performance, making it a seamless transition for clients. It is suitable for various applications, including food packaging, flexible packaging, and consumer goods.
Braskem has partnered with suppliers in the value chain to convert bio-circular feedstock into polypropylene, creating a sustainable loop. The company’s bio-circular PP is certified by ISCC Plus and is a mass-balanced product, ensuring that its production does not compromise existing downstream converter production and end-of-life recycling processes.
Industry experts believe that the launch of bio-circular PP marks a significant step towards a more sustainable economy. “By adopting this innovative solution, companies can play a crucial role in promoting circularity and reducing their environmental impact,” said Courtney Keller, Sustainability Commercial Manager at Braskem.
Braskem aims to be among the global leaders in greenhouse gas emissions reduction and a key player in carbon capture through the production of materials with renewable, biobased raw materials. The company has set targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The launch of bio-circular PP is part of Braskem’s efforts to promote sustainability in the food industry. The company believes that its innovative solution can help companies reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a greener future.
