Munich-based BioTreasure has secured €2.5 million from SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation, to scale its integrated bio-chemical manufacturing platform toward industrial deployment.
The funding marks BioTreasure’s advancement to Stage III of SPRIND’s Circular Biomanufacturing Challenge. The company has progressed through all three stages since 2023, with validation from an international expert jury.
BioTreasure is developing a manufacturing system that combines circular continuous fermentation with proprietary chemistry to produce bio-based chemicals from renewable feedstocks. The platform targets markets in advanced materials, personal and home care, and agrochemicals, representing a combined market opportunity of €400 billion.
The company was established through collaboration between SPRIND and Insempra, a Munich-based industrial biotechnology firm. Insempra has experience in scaling bio-based ingredient production to industrial levels. BioTreasure builds on this foundation by integrating chemical conversion directly into the biological manufacturing process.
Traditional chemical manufacturing relies heavily on concentrated petrochemical and oleochemical supply chains. Biological production offers renewable alternatives but has faced limitations in product range and development speed. BioTreasure’s approach combines both biological and chemical processes into a unified system designed for industrial scale.
“At Insempra, we’ve built an industrial biotechnology platform that has proven that biology works at scale,” said Jens Klein, CEO and Founder of Insempra. “BioTreasure is integrating chemistry directly into that system.”
Johannes Sonnenschein, CEO and Co-Founder of BioTreasure, said the company is now advancing toward industrial deployment and commercialization with support from SPRIND and Insempra.
