Modern Meadow, a company recognized for its advancements in sustainable materials, has formed a strategic partnership with Australian carry brand Bellroy. Bellroy plans to utilize Modern Meadow’s INNOVERA™ biomaterial, formerly known as BIO-VERA®, for select consumer carry goods.
INNOVERA™ is a biomaterial engineered from plant-based proteins, biopolymers, and post-consumer waste. It mimics the appearance and texture of collagen found in leather. With over 80% renewable carbon content, INNOVERA™ provides an animal-free alternative compatible with standard manufacturing processes. The material is lightweight, durable, and reportedly twice as strong as traditional leather.
David Williamson, CEO of Modern Meadow, stated that their goal is to help companies like Bellroy produce sustainable, high-quality products. By incorporating INNOVERA™ into its accessories, Bellroy aims to create carry goods that are not only functional but also environmentally friendly. The durability of INNOVERA™ makes it suitable for high-wear applications.
Bellroy has emphasized responsible business practices since its inception. The company offers a range of products, including bags and tech accessories, made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles and discarded fishing nets. As a certified B Corp, Bellroy is committed to addressing social and environmental issues, balancing its responsibilities to people, animals, and the planet.
Bellroy co-founder Andy Fallshaw noted the importance of supporting materials that address environmental challenges without creating negative impacts elsewhere. He highlighted that INNOVERA™ helps manage significant waste streams while outperforming traditional leather in various aspects, from durability to customizable aesthetics.
The first products featuring INNOVERA™ are expected to be launched by Bellroy in the second half of 2025.
