The Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG) and AINIA have signed a collaboration agreement to enhance biogas and biomethane production in Spain. This partnership aims to promote research and innovation, fostering sustainability across key sectors like agri-food, chemical, and environmental industries.
The agreement was signed by Manuel García Portillo, President of AINIA, and Luis Puchades, President of AEBIG, both emphasizing their commitment to developing biogas and biomethane as dependable energy sources.
The collaboration will focus on several strategic initiatives. These include the valorization of organic waste through anaerobic digestion and the treatment and agronomic reuse of digestate. Efforts will also target the characterization of substrates for biogas production and the development of innovative pretreatment technologies.
Additionally, the partnership will explore new applications for biogas, such as converting it into high-value chemical products through the Gas2Chemicals process.
AINIA has led Spain’s biogas sector for over two decades, engaging in numerous renewable energy projects. Their expertise includes optimizing production methods and developing processes that enhance efficiency.
Recent initiatives include UPBIOMET+, which aims to advance anaerobic digestion technology to increase biomethane production by converting CO₂ into additional methane. This project seeks to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Another project, COMBOI, focuses on transforming CO₂ and methane into high-value bio-based products through biotechnology and catalysis.
Founded in 2009, AEBIG is a non-profit organization advocating for biogas as a renewable energy source. It represents a wide array of stakeholders in the biogas industry and actively participates in national and international forums, also serving as a founding member of the European Biogas Association (EBA).
